VFW POST 5702

Mission Statement

On the national level, the mission of the VFW is to "honor the dead by helping the living" through service to veterans, community service, and commitment to national security and a strong national defense.

The communities of Franklin Lakes and Oakland are the jurisdiction or area of service for VFW Post 5702. Our commitment to honor our fallen comrades by helping the living and providing community service is manifested by our involvement in the following projects and activities:

  • Members of VFW Post 5702 visit the Veterans Nursing Home in Paramus several times a week. We organize bingo games for the patients and provide money for the prizes.
  • We bring some of the patients from the Veterans Nursing Home to the Post a few times a year and provide them with a spaghetti dinner.
  • We organize the Memorial Day Parade and conduct the ceremony in Franklin Lakes
  • The Post sponsors the Voice of Democracy Essay Contest for students in both Ramapo and Indian Hills High Schools, the Patriot's Pen Essay Contest for students in Valley Middle School in Oakland and the Franklin Avenue Middle School in Franklin Lakes, and the VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher Award program that identifies and recognizes America's best educators who instill a sense of national pride in students for teachers in Franklin Lakes and Oakland
  • The Post serves as a meeting place for civic and community organizations.
  • The VFW participates in community events like the Franklin Lakes Town Fair and the Oakland Memorial Day Parade and ceremony, and sponsors events of community interest like our annual car shows.
  • The Post provides guest speakers to local schools.
  • VFW Post 5702 recognizes and honors members of local police and fire departments, as well as members of local ambulance squads.
  • The Post provides monetary support for Fisher House , a low cost hotel facility in Washington, D.C. that aids family members visiting injured or sick soldiers being treated at Walter Reed Army Hospital.
  • The Post provides monetary support for The Wounded Warrior Project . This endeavor helps severely injured soldiers readjust to civilian life.
  • The Post supports soldiers currently fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan by sending them "Care" type packages.
Individual Post members are also active in providing Hospice and Home Care visitations to area homes and nursing homes, transportation to health facilities, and serving the poor and homeless.

The Post presents a Citizenship Award every year to a student at the Franklin Avenue Middle School in Franklin Lakes in memory of Pat Mennella. We also present a Citizenship Award to a student in the Valley Middle School in Oakland in memory of Joe Farrarella.

The Post presents awards to members of the Scouts who have attained Eagle Scout or Girl Scout Gold Award status.

The Post supports Scouting, and Post members have made presentations and provided guided tours of the Post to Scouts.The members of VFW Post 5702 are all combat veterans who continue their tradition of service to their country by initiating and supporting programs to provide for their fellow veterans, improve their communities, and preserve our American heritage.
