VFW Post 5702 Supports the Troops

As part of a continuing effort to support members of the military, Franklin Lakes VFW Post 5702 held a supplies collection drive on Sunday, January 14, 2007 at the Stop and Shop in Franklin Lakes. According to Commander Steve Vreeland, “The purpose of our activity was to generate a pool of supplies we can send to members of the military serving in the Iraq – Afghanistan theater of operations. The effort provides the general public a means to show their support for the troops by purchasing an item or two from a list we supplied and donating those items to us as they leave the store. After the supplies are shipped and received by the troops, it provides a boost, a touch of home, and some encouragement to those serving our country in faraway places under difficult and life-threatening conditions. This activity was arranged through the management of the Franklin Lakes Stop and Shop. We thank them for their help and continued support of the VFW.”

“We were very successful in this activity in part because of the help and support of a group of fourteen students from the Franklin Avenue Middle School,” stated Dominic Stimola, Post 5702 Advocate. “The students were enthusiastic, and we thank FAMS Guidance Counselor Bill Gorton who arranged for the students to help us and supervised their activities. This is not the first time that he and the FAMS students have helped us with an activity, and they have always been terrific.”

“As former members of the military who served combat zones, all of us at the Post understand the need to support the young men and young women that we have sent into combat,” stated Post Adjutant Doug Neralich. “This effort to send packages is only one aspect of our effort to support these troops. We also support Fisher House, an organization that provides support for families visiting injured troops, and The Wounded Warrior Project, an organization that helps severely wounded troops readjust to civilian life.”

Post 5702 is currently sending supplies to several individuals from our area, and is supporting a platoon from the 5 th /7 th Cav. Readers who know the names and addresses of members of the military serving in combat zones and would like them to receive a package, should contact the post commander.

Anyone who wishes to donate supplies to support this effort can drop them off at Post 5702 any Monday evening between 6:30 P.M. and 8:00 P.M. Information about Fisher House and The Wounded Warrior Project can be found on VFW Post 5702's website at www.VFWPost5702.org . Organizations or individuals wishing to make a donation to Fisher House and/or the Wounded Warrior Project should contact Commander Steve Vreeland. (ocsqd785@aol.com)
