FAMS Students Visit VFW Post 5702

On Tuesday, March 13, 2007, eighteen of Mrs. Milano's students from the Franklin Avenue Middle School walked across Pulis Avenue to VFW Post 5702 to learn about the role local residents have played in world events by exploring the exhibits at the Post. During their stay, the students explored local history by examining exhibits related to WWI, WWII, POW/MIA issues, Desert Storm, and a special exhibit of a detailed scale model of the USS Constitution hand-made by VFW Post 5702 Post Commander Steve Vreeland. The students also participated in a Fact Scavenger Hunt that required them to scour the many permanent exhibits in the Post for more specific information. Their visit was enriched and punctuated by presentations made by Post 5702 members Joe Schreiber, Jim Sweeney, Robert Talan, Doug Neralich, and Post Commander Steve Vreeland.

According to Commander Vreeland, “teenagers are always hungry.” With that idea in mind, the students learned about military cuisine by sampling the contents of military style Meals Ready to Eat (MREs).

FAMS student Brandon Dominguez described the visit as “pretty cool,” and Nicholas Brunelli commented that it was “a nice and different experience.” Others found the visit “awesome” and “interesting” and many of the students seemed to really enjoy sampling the contents of the MREs.

According to FAMS teacher Sharon Milano: “I have always had tremendous respect for the men and women who wear our country's uniform.” The program that our VFW (Post 5702) has designed for our students is a reminder of the dedication that so many of our veterans have made to serve our country and our community.”
